Problem & Engineering Context

Enterprise systems previously suffered from configuration drift across environments (Dev, Test, Pre-prod, Prod). Alerts were created manually via web consoles, resulting in inconsistent thresholds, unmaintained orphaned alerts, high alert fatigue, and lack of auditability.

In critical payment platforms handling thousands of transactions per minute, missed alerts or noisy false alarms directly impact customer SLA and operational response times. A standardized declarative solution was required to treat monitoring artifacts with the same rigor as application source code.

Strategic Approach

Engineered modular Terraform modules for alert policies, NRQL conditions, composite thresholds, notification channels, and dynamic dashboard layouts. Coupled with GitHub Actions CI/CD to validate syntax, test NRQL queries, and automatically apply changes on pull request merges.

Technical Architecture

Declarative Telemetry Pipeline

Engineers declare monitoring rules in HCL. GitHub Actions runs terraform plan, authenticates securely with HashiCorp Vault, and deploys directly to New Relic via official provider APIs.

  • Modular Terraform architecture with reusable templates for microservice tiers (APIs, message queues, databases).
  • HashiCorp Vault dynamic secret injection for New Relic API keys during CI runs.
  • Automated PR validation for NRQL syntax correctness and threshold boundaries.
  • State file locking in secure cloud storage with strict RBAC access policies.

Implementation Details

  • 01.Built standardized Terraform submodules: newrelic_alert_policy, newrelic_nrql_alert_condition, and newrelic_one_dashboard.
  • 02.Configured dynamic thresholds using standard deviations and static thresholds based on historical P99 latency percentiles.
  • 03.Implemented incident tagging taxonomies to route notifications intelligently to PagerDuty and Slack escalation channels based on severity.
  • 04.Established peer review guardrails in GitHub so platform changes undergo automated linting and SRE team approval before deployment.

Key Challenges & Resolutions

Migrating hundreds of legacy manual alerts without triggering duplicate incident notifications during cutover.
Handling rate limits on New Relic APIs during large batch Terraform applies by implementing backoff strategies and module chunking.
Educating application development teams on declaring their own service level objectives (SLOs) in code.

Measurable Outcomes

Successfully automated 400+ alert conditions and 100+ observability dashboards across production environments.
Eliminated configuration drift between non-production and production environments.
Reduced time required to onboard a new microservice into the observability platform from 3 days to under 15 minutes.
Created a single source of truth in Git with complete version history and audit compliance.

Key Engineering Takeaways

💡 Declarative infrastructure is only as good as the team's testing conventions; automated NRQL syntax validation caught over 90% of misconfigurations early.

💡 Standardized tagging conventions early in the process save hundreds of hours when slicing telemetry across multi-tenant clusters.
